Week 2
Throughout the Chicana feminist movement, steps for the Chicana women were being made gradually. Starting with small gatherings then morphing into feminist papers, chicana women were getting their names and politics into the world. In the book “Chicana Power!” author, Blackwell, states “Many of the activist women I interviewed created new forms of community and belonging, new structures of feelings and meaning,” (Blackwell 61). Women began coming together and forming empowering groups from an early age of the chicana feminist movement. Although these groups may not have been creating art, they were creating a safe space to express their complex idenitities. Later in her book, Blackwell speaks of how women who were becoming involved in politics ended up being sexualized rather than able to voice their political opinions, (Blackwell 70). This is where much of the fuel for the chicana feminist movement fire came from. These women started to attempt to express their political views and instead of recieving any respect they were bashed. Later, Blackwell writes on the “importance of Chicana feminist print cultutres,” (Blackwell 106), which served as a creative space for women to speak their minds and to become political. Much of the discrimmination Chicana women faced inspired them and resulted in gatherings and papers. The social movements gave confidence to these women to finally create papers and creative spaces to speak out about their hardships and discrimmination.
