Feminism in the Borderlines

Week 1 In Maya Jupiter’s song, she illustrates her independnce and ability to lead. She does so through her lyrics, referring to herself as a guardian, a relief,  an Aspen, and as fierce. All of these words paint the neoliberalist views of independence and individual responsibility. Not only are her lyrics empowering to me as a woman, they are empowering to me as a political human as well. The feminist characters and movements she bring up inspire myself as a women to be strong. Her lyrics inspire not only my feminist side, but my political side. In the first verse she brings up a detention center and prison. She speaks of how she is the solutiom to these political issues.  Through her passion and story she influences me to stay tough and resilient. Her story of political unrest and needing to make a change is supported through her strong language. All of her diction choices are passionate and you can feel her strength grow throughout the songs. Week 2 Throughout the Chicana feminist movement, steps for the Chicana women were being made gradually. Starting with small gatherings then morphing into feminist papers, chicana women were getting their names and politics into the world. In the book “Chicana Power!” author, Blackwell, states “Many of the activist women I interviewed created new forms of community and belonging, new structures of feelings and  meaning,” (Blackwell 61). Women began coming together and forming empowering groups from an early age of the chicana feminist movement. Although these groups may not have been creating art, they were creating a safe space to express their complex idenitities. Later in her book, Blackwell speaks of how women who were becoming involved in politics ended up being sexualized rather than able to voice their political opinions, (Blackwell 70).
